Data Policy

This Data Policy describes what data Better Than Socks stores, how it is processed, and how it is protected. It works alongside our Privacy Policy.

You can use the gift finder and view recommendations without an account. Your finder answers are used only to produce your recommendations and are not stored against your identity unless you sign in and choose to save them.

If you create an account, it stores the following categories of data:

• Saved people (children and others): name, birthday, age, interests, personality, gift preferences, avoidances, photo, optional postal address, and notes.
• Gifts: gift ideas, favourites, previous gifts, status, price, category, purchase link and image.
• Curated gift edit: products curated by Better Than Socks, including name, brand, price, category, age range, interests, personality tags, editorial rationale, image and an Amazon affiliate link.
• Reminder preferences: chosen channels (email, app) and lead time.
• Notifications: in-app reminder messages generated for upcoming birthdays.

You may optionally save a postal address for a person (for example, to help with sending gifts or cards). Providing an address is entirely optional. Addresses are stored only in your account, protected by row-level security, and are never shared with other users or third parties.

Every email login is a separate account. Records are isolated using row-level security: only the account that created a person, gift, preference or notification can read or modify it. The curated gift edit is publicly readable so recommendations work without login, but only admins can add or edit products.

Your data is processed to display your saved people and gifts, track birthdays, and generate reminders. Reminders are checked when you open the app and delivered through the channels you selected (in-app notifications and, if enabled, email to your registered address).

When you use the gift finder, your answers (age, interests, personality, budget, avoidances) are scored against the curated gift edit to pick three matches. An AI model may be used to write the short "why we chose it" explanation for the products already selected — it never invents products, prices or links. Only the information needed to produce your recommendations is shared with the model provider for that request.

Product checkout links point to Amazon UK and include our affiliate tracking tag where an approved Amazon URL exists. Where a product's Amazon link has not yet been verified, we show "Amazon link coming soon" rather than a broken or invented link.

If you enable email reminders, we send a one-time email per upcoming birthday to your registered email address. SMS/text reminders are not available on this plan.

Your data is kept while your account is active. You can delete individual people or gifts at any time, or delete your account from Settings to remove your associated data. Reminder notifications can be cleared as well.

Data is protected through secure authentication, per-account row-level isolation, and encrypted connections. Access to your data is limited to what is necessary to provide the service.

You can edit or delete your data at any time within the app, change your reminder channels and lead time in Settings, and delete your account to remove your data.
